This is the first of a daily log to keep all our members at UMSC up to date on our teams progress.

Yesterday the team left Toronto for Winnipeg at 8.20am. The fun started almost straight away with one our player back up defender Anderson missing the flight.
Thanks to Air Canada for all their assistance in getting our man over on the next flight! Coach Paul DeAbreau was quite relieved to see him.

We all arrived expecting the worst of it when it came to weather and were pleased to be met on arrival with sunny skies and the temperature at 28C.

The same weather is expected today for our first game so the lads are pleased.

Yesterday the coach put them through their paces at a hastily arranged practice field after there was confusion with the bus taking us to our pre-assigned practice field. The boys looked sharp and eager to go. Exciting times ahead.

After practice, the coaching staff went to the game pitch to inspect it. The pitch is in great condition and suits our team perfectly! It is a wide and long field. Full size!
This is rare with some of the parks we are all experienced in playing on. This will work well for the speed and touch of our team.

Last night the coaches went to the pre-tournament meeting to get a run down on the rules. The biggest challenge facing the staff will be with a substitution rule limiting changes to five during the game. A major rule affecting our pool is that because we are in a pool of only two teams all games in the round robin must be decided. Therefore, if after the 90 minutes we are tied, we will go into overtime with a golden goal and penalty shootouts!

This morning the lads are relaxing at the hotel preparing for our 2.00 pm game. My next report will be posted then.

UMSC 2 - Alberta 1

Well Game 1 is in the bag so to speak!

After almost a complete month from the team's historic victory in the Ontario Cup final our team faced its first competitive game. The game was played in great weather hovering around 26C with sunny skies.

We played a highly rated and talented Alberta team. They began the game at a frenetic pace and our boys were looking rusty. The month without a competitive game was not looking good. Perhaps we were also caught up in the moment and the boys began tentatively. Alberta were applying the pressure from the first whistle.

After 20 minutes or so we started to settle and got into the game playing our hallmark touch game with control. Until the half we just lacked that finishing ball. The welcome arrival from University of Daniel Levy also sparked us well.

After the second half we seemed to have the game under control. The game had become a bruising one with no quarter given or asked for. Both teams flew into tackles with reckless abandon and the game went end to end. An inspired substitution by Coach DeAbreau saw the introduction of Chris Walker. After sustained pressure from the midfield and attack the first goal was scored by Chris. Great hustle and a job well done.

The game was seemingly under our control and especially when Alberta had a player dismissed with a red card on a dangerous tackle.

The tragedy struck! First of all star striker Frank Jonke went down with a knee injury. Alberta seized on the moment and attacked. A hard but fair tackle resulted in that one call that seems to go against you when all is well. In the 2nd minute of overtime Alberta got a free kick just outside the box. A well struck ball took a wicked deflection and flew into the bottom right hand of the goal wrong footing Devon in goal.

With the final whistle gone the game was tied 1-1!

What was even worse that our two stars Frank Jonke and Chris DeAbreau were hobbled by injuries.

Overtime and much of the same. Unionville pressure with swift counter attacking from a never-say-die attitude from Alberta. Then things got even worse. Stand out defender Sam Goodman went down with an injury and came off. The last substitution was used and on came Anderson Elster to shore up the defence.

Now into double overtime and still looking for that elusive winner Chris DeAbreu put aside personal pain and found that moment of magic! After a well worked move starting from the back through Jason Joseph and José D'Amaro the ball found itself and the feet of our General. With a shimmy and an defence splitting side step the gap was found. Chris placed a beautiful shot to beat an excellent Alberta keeper to record Unionville's first National win!

An outstanding job by the whole team. The defence of Jason, Sheldon and Shane was outstanding. Devon was solid in the back. The midfield with Mustafa doing a yeoman's job was efficient and at the end of the day we were worthy winners.

Kudos to Alberta on a great game. They are an outstanding team.

After the game Charles Grant went to work repairing all our injuries. Hopefully a good night's sleep will help and our boys will be ready for Nova Scotia tomorrow.

The day ended with a Thanksgiving Dinner hosted by Manitoba. Their hospitality is amazing. The boys were treated to a dinner speech by Canada's foremost Referee who has been to the last world cup working 6 games!

So we are off to a good night's sleep and a well deserved rest.

UMSC 1 - Nova Scotia 0

This morning we were greeted with a bit of good news/bad news scenario. First of all the good news Chris DeAbreu and Daniel Goodman responded well to the treatments they had received, but Frank Jonke our star striker looked worse for wear!

After a prolonged visit to the Pan Am clinic where we were treated exceptionally well, we were relieved to hear that the injury was not that serious. A recommended day off and the Doctors felt he would be good to continue terrorizing defences!

So the team went off to play highly rated Nova Scotia, fresh from their 3-2 win over Saskatchewan. A lot at stake high as a winner from either side meant 1st place from Group C & D and a berth in the medal rounds!

The weather Gods were not so kind to us today and we were greeted with cloudy overcast conditions. The temperature was 19C with gusting winds.

Nova Scotia started well and look a very polished and well-coached side. With the wind behind them they started taking the game to us but our boys responded with equal intensity. Without Frank in attack Coach Paul went for Yashin Moazez to partner the impressive Chris Walker.

Our lads played an outstanding first half and had a number of chances fall to Yashin, who was giving the Nova Scotia lads fits in defence. Continued pressure in the first half and equally outstanding play by Nova Scotia made for an exciting 1st half. Good chances falling to both sides. We felt a little unlucky not to have converted on one of our chances. Good keeping and bad finishing combined to frustrate.

Equally Nova Scotia kept us busy, but Devon Spiers brought his A game in goal today. With a 0-0 score at half and with an anticipated wind advantage behind us the coaches were confident of finishing off the game in the 2nd half.

Dixie girls, Ontario's girls' representatives, also cheered the boys on. Thanks girls for the support we will see you tomorrow!

The 2nd half was a flatter affair for Unionville and it appeared the hard physical grind of the first game was starting to be felt. Nova Scotia played with enthusiasm and clearly looked like a team destined for the medal rounds! Again both sides created chances and the keepers from both team made critical clearances and interception.

At 90 minutes we were locked at 0-0. Overtime beckoned again! We lost the toss and were playing into the wind. The game started and Unionville had their first shot on goal within 45 seconds! End to end action and both sides threw everything they had into looking for that elusive goal.

Daniel Levy's pass to Yashin and great interplay with Jason, Mustafa, Sheldon and Chris saw Unionville force a corner. A well placed corner low and to the near post by Levy saw the little General Chris DeAbreu meet the ball and one time it into the net.

Mr Golden had struck again and we left the field elated with a 1-0 victory and a guaranteed spot in the medal round. More importantly we now have a day off to rest our injuries and get ready for a semi final berth. A well deserved break!

The coaches will be busy scouting potential opponents and preparing for Sunday.

Congratulations to Nova Scotia on an outstanding performance. They await the complicated tiebreaker rules to settle their fate and a potential semi final berth against British Colombia.

Until next time keep cheering us on! Who knows where this journey will end. Wherever we are certainly making the most of it and having great fun at it.

Coach DeAbreu commented how proud he was with the boys and felt relieved to have done so well to date

Saturday, October 11, 2003

On the eve of the most important day in Unionville's soccer life, the Unionville Strikers appeared poised and relaxed. There is a sense of anticipation and excitement in the air and the biggest challenge facing the team tonight is to ensure that all the boys have a restful and full night's sleep.

Day 4 of our journey was a quiet one. The weather in the morning was cold and overcast with rain in the air. The team woke up early to go to cheer Ontario's girls team Dixie Fury in their last round robin game. After a lot of confusion with the bussing the boys were finally able to reciprocate the girls support and watched them beat a spirited Manitoba team 3-0. So they are also in the medal rounds tomorrow. Good luck girls and thanks for the support!

The coaches went to the final games in the round robin stage to scout the opposition and watched an impressive and skilful Quebec team destroy New Brunswick 7-0!

The other game saw the tournament favourites British Colombia easily win 5-0. BC are a very strong athletic side and will really be a handful for Nova Scotia in the semi finals. They deserve the tag of the top seed.

We will be facing Quebec. They are quick and extremely skilful and will be quite a force to be reckoned with in our game. Robert Ortali the Club President watching the game feels that their attractive style of play and ours will make for an exciting and attractive game for all supporters. When asked for his prediction Robert said that it could go either way but that Quebec's tag of second favourite was well justified. The boys will have to bring their A game tomorrow to be in with a chance.

Coach DeAbreu put the team through a light training session and the boys looked very sharp. All the coaches were encouraged with the intensity and effort put in by them.

On the injury front Charles Grant seems to be working wonders. All our walking wounded seem to be doing better and the day off has been quite a blessing. Charles feels they should all be ready for tomorrow. After a team bonding dinner at the Olive Garden the team are off to bed and await their fate tomorrow.

Until then keep us in your prayers and cheer us on.

UMSC 3 - Quebec 2

THE COMEBACK KINGS STRIKE AGAIN!

On a sunny warm autumn day Unionville Strikers came back from the dead to beat a highly rated and talented Quebec side 3-2.

In the earlier semi final British Colombia stamped their class on the tournament with an efficient and thoroughly professional performance. They beat a good Nova Scotia team 5-2. Clearly leaving the field as overwhelming favourites for the final.

The Strikers and Quebec started the game at a frenetic pace. Both teams showed touches of class, outstanding passing and lightening fast attacks.

Quebec showed a game which is built on pace, vision and possession. They constantly posed a threat to the Strikers. After a tense first few minutes where Quebec offence was swarming over Unionville, the boys finally settled in.

Frank Jonke was showing his class and causing panic in the defence. Both sides squandered chances. In the 12th minute Frank laid a superb pass to Captain Golden Chris DeAbreu who unleashed a fierce shot. The shot was met by an even more spectacular save by the Quebec keeper.

Then a mistake and lost possession in the midfield saw Quebec’s lightening speed in full flight. Quick interplay left Devon Spiers no chance in net. Quebec 1-0.

The 1st half continued with both teams playing well and chances created. Outstanding defence and an intense midfield struggle kept the fans enthralled.

4 minutes into the second half a speculative cross from the right and with the assistance of the wind floated past the keeper and died into the right hand corner of the net. Quebec were up 2-0. Disaster!

The boys never gave up and continued to take the game to Quebec. Danny Levy’s long throw-ins were causing panic in defence. Sammy Goodman and Mustafa Zafarzadeh were getting through an enormous amount of work in the mid.

The pressure finally told. Another long throw-in by Levy to Frank Jonke was laid back to Sammy Goodman who turned and was fouled in the box.  Jose D’Amora converted from the spot to bring the boys back 1-2.

Continued pressure and relentless running brought about the second goal from a corner kick by Danny Levy.  The kick was met on the near post by Liam Farrell to tie the score 2-2.

Ontario Strikers were now firmly in control of the game.  With 10 minutes to go, up popped the captain Chris DeAbreu to lay off a defence splitting pass to Frank Jonke who beat the on-coming keeper putting Ontario 3-2 in the lead.

Quebec threw everything they had into the game to come back.  Our Strikers responded admirably. A tense last 2 minutes saw Quebec hit the post and nearly tie the game.  The follow-up shot was well saved by Devon Spiers.

Quebec can be proud of the way they played.  Our boys from Ontario have done the province and the Unionville Milliken Soccer Club proud.

The fans were treated to the best game of the tournament so far.  We look forward to tomorrow’s final.

UMSC 1 - British Columbia 2

Today’s National JVC Under 18 final did what so many finals so often fail to do. It lived up to all the hype.

The weather was a little cool but the skies were sunny and there was a full house to cheer both teams on. The Unionville boys were grateful for the support and cheering they received from Ontario’s other team at the Nationals, Dixie Fury. Well-done girls on a well-deserved Bronze medal with a 2-0 win over Quebec and thanks for the cheering.

The game started at a terrific pace with both teams playing their own brand of soccer. The Ontario team playing its’ trade mark touch and possession game and the British Colombia boys with their more direct and fast-pace game. Both sides created chances and defences held up well to the attack.

The best chance fell to Unionville and in the 40the minute a superbly played free kick by Chris DeAbreu found Danny Levy wide who one timed a cross high into the area which was bulleted into the top hand corner by Frank Jonke’s header. Textbook stuff! But the goal was pulled back by a late call by the Ref when his assistant called the ball out as Levy hit the cross to the total amazement of the crowd and team and the relief of the BC team.

The 2nd half continued with much of the same until the 9th minute when Shane Bookal fired in a great shot after a goalmouth scramble. 1-0.

BC picked up the pressure and a turnover in the Unionville box resulted in a great shot beating the keeper. 1-1.

A minute later the Ontario team conceded a free kick and a classic far post header by BC’s Captain and defender beat our keeper to put BC in the lead.1-2.

From here on in the game continued in much of the same way as the earlier part. Chirrs DeAbreu had a spectacular shot saved on a wicked volley hit from outside the area and heading for the top right hand corner of the net.

Liam Farrell had a great diving header cleared by a defender with the ball all but certain to cross the line without this timely interception.

The Unionville boys played valiantly and at the final whistle collapsed with exhaustion. Every one of them had played their hearts out. They have won many admirers and supporters for their brand of soccer. They played and with the class and dignity they showed.

The team was lead superbly by the playmaking skills and vision of Captain Golden Chris DeAbreu; the defensive speed hustle and strength of Jason Joseph who reminds the writer of the Brazilian Junior; the class of Sheldon Parchment who shows the hallmark of greatness; the solid defender and dribbling skills of Shane Bookal; the reliable and hardworking Devon Spiers in goal who grew in stature with every game; the unbelievable non stop hustle and ball winning skills of Mustafa Zafarzadeh; the cool and hustle of Jose D’Amaro; the sheer power and speed and offensive threat of Frank Jonke, who overcame so much pain to lead the attack; the total unpredictability and dancing feet of Chris Walker; the heart and vision of the never-say-die attitude of Danny Imbrogno; the sheer pace of the man with the magic throw–in of Danny Levy; the class, vision, consistency and maturity of Sammy Goodman; the exciting speed and skill of Yashin Moazez; the strength and heading prowess of Liam Farrell; the cultured and Samba like skills of Carlos Robayo and the defensive strength and power of Elster Anderson.

Well done lads. The Unionville-Milliken Soccer club is proud of our first ever National silver medallists.

A special word about Coach Paul DeAbreu who is the heart and soul of the team. His shrewdness and cunning make him a coaches coach. The respect he commands from his boys is evident and his tactics and vision brought the team to this level. I personally have learnt a lot from Paul. He has the heart of a champion.

The Manager Frank Joseph who has been with the team since its inception and whose efficiency made Paul’s job easier.

A very special thanks to Charles Grant who worked so hard mending our boys, and getting them ready for the game.

Thanks also to the President of UMSC and the board for all the support they have given the team we hope we made you proud.
